Do Dental Implants Hurt?

Many people don’t want to visit the dentist because they think that dental treatments are painful. Getting dental implants is no different. Some patients are very hesitant to get implants due to the possible discomfort. However, the benefits of getting implants far outweigh the short-term pain that comes with the procedure.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are prosthetic devices that replace tooth roots. These can only be used in areas of the gums where the tooth has completely fallen off. The prosthetic is made with titanium, a biocompatible material that is hypoallergenic and safe even for elders and people with sensitivities. The implant is shaped like a screw, with the bottom half embedded into the gum and bone and the top half attached to a dental crown.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Getting dental implants has many benefits:

  1. Implants preserve the jaw bone. Without teeth, the gum and jaw bone deteriorates over time. Replacing the tooth with an implant maintains the integrity of your bone structure.
  2. Implants preserve the facial shape. Losing teeth can also make the cheeks look sullen. With dental implants, your face won’t change shape because your lost teeth will be replaced.
  3. Implants restore chewing power. While dentures may look similar, dental implants provide better chewing power because the structure is embedded into the gums.
  4. Implants last a lifetime. Dentures can get worn out over the years, but dental implants endure daily wear and tear. They can even last longer than natural teeth.

Dental Implant Surgery Procedure

Before getting dental implants, your dentist will first closely examine your dental condition. Once the dentist confirms that you are qualified for dental implants, they will clean out the gaps in your mouth to remove the remaining debris and tooth material. Afterwards, they will apply anaesthesia to numb the gums. The dental implants will be screwed through the gums and deep into the jaw bone, creating a solid foundation for the restorative crown.

The crowns are created in dental laboratories and may take a few days to complete. However, placing the crowns onto the implants does not hurt at all. Once the crowns are installed, the dental implantation procedure is now complete.

Does the Surgery Hurt?

Any surgical procedure may cause pain. However, you will not experience any pain or discomfort during the actual surgery because of the anaesthesia. You may feel some discomfort after the procedure, but nothing serious that over-the-counter painkillers can’t resolve.

Post-Surgical Care and Maintenance

Right after surgery, you will be given instructions to care for your new dental implants. Here are some essential tips to remember after getting dental implant surgery:

  • For the next two weeks, maintain a soft diet to prevent immediate trauma to the newly placed implants.
  • Observe proper dental hygiene through daily brushing.
  • Gargle with warm salt water to prevent infections.
  • Take over-the-counter painkillers whenever you feel discomfort.

If you experience any extreme discomfort, bleeding, or other signs of infection, call your dentist and schedule a follow-up appointment right away.
